Smart Steering is disabled in Time Trials mode and cannot be turned on most likely to avoid cheating. They very quickly enable it by opening the pause menu, and then disable it quickly after. Smart Steering is also used by skilled players to avoid falling off the track. Another disadvantage to Smart Steering is its tendency to stick players at the edge of a track on certain turns, causing players to slow down. Sometimes, Smart Steering may cause the chosen path to switch unexpectedly, which may cause frustration. However, it has disadvantages too, the Ultra Mini-Turbo cannot be accessed while it's enabled and off-road shortcuts can't be reached (Occasionally, a Mushroom or Star can allow players to access such shortcuts).
